Obtaining Your FinCEN ID Tutorial - Corporate Transparency Act (CTA)

The following are the steps required to obtain a FinCEN ID:

  1. To complete the process, you will need a scan of your ID document (just the side with the unique identifying number and any other identifying information), which ID document may be a: (i) driver’s license, (ii) state/local/tribe-issued ID, (iii) U.S. passport, or (iv) only if you have none of the other types, foreign passport. The scan must be in JPG/JPEG, PNG, or PDF format and no larger than 4mb in size. 

  2. Go to fincenid.fincen.gov/landing and proceed through the prompts to create an account, using your email address.

  3. On the “Authentication method setup” page, it is recommended that you select at least two additional layers of protection.

  4. Once your account has been created and your additional layers of protection have been established, navigate back to fincenid.fincen.gov/landing and proceed to sign in using your newly created login credentials.

  5. To obtain your FinCEN ID, you will be asked for the following personal information:

    1. First, middle and last names, along with any applicable suffix;

    2. Date of birth;

    3. Residential address, and if you will be using your FinCEN ID in your capacity as a Company Applicant and in your role as a Company Applicant you work in corporate formation (e.g. as an attorney, a formation agent, etc.), also provide your business address;

    4. The type of ID document you will be using and certain information listed on your ID document; and

    5. A scan of your ID document.

  6. Click “I agree” to certify that the information you are providing is true, correct and complete, and click “Submit.”

  7. The next page will list your newly created FinCEN ID.
